The Lisbon Cathedral, initially designated as the Church of Santa Maria Maior, was built in 1150 by D. Afonso Henriques, three years after having conquered Lisbon from the Moors.
The most precious piece of the cathedral is the ark containing the remains of the saint, transferred from Cape St. Vincent to Lisbon in 1173. Legend says that two holy crow kept a permanent image on the ship carrying the relics. The crows and the boat have become the symbol of the city of Lisbon. It is also said that the descendants of the two original crows lived in the cloisters of the cathedral.
