Its name in the Mapuche language means Huio Huio or ‘water rumor’. It has been a historical river par excellence. During the Colony it was the frontier and the great theater of the Arauco War and in the struggle for National Independence, where it witnessed several battles between patriots and royalists. Its most important function is to supply drinking water to more than a million people.
It crosses part of the southern part of Chile.
Concepcion is located 510 km south of Santiago, 399 km from Chillán and 127 km. from the city of Los Angeles. It can be reached:
By plane
Daily flights depart from Santiago at the Arturo Merino Benítez Airport. The duration of the flight is 1 hour.
By car
It can be reached from Chillán to the southwest by Route 5 South, it is 15 km., And then to the west by Route 152. In total there are 112 km. on asphalt road.
It can be reached from Los Angeles to the north by Route 5 south to the town of Cabrero and from there to the northwest. In total there are 130 km. on asphalt road.
By bus
Buses leave every 1 hour from the main terminals in Santiago, the trip takes 6 hours. From regions there are daily departures, you should check with the respective road terminals.
In its upper course it generates energy and allows sports such as rafting. Others take advantage of its deep pools for fishing or developing fish farming.
