Mariana was the first city, capital, town and seat of bishopric of the State of Minas Gerais. It originated from a camp on the banks of Ribeirão do Carmo in 1703, founded by pioneer miners searching for a strategic place in the race that began in search of the gold of the region.
The village became Vila a few years later and, in 1745, it became a city. She was baptized of Mariana in honor of Dona Maria Ana D "Austria, wife of Dom Joao V.
He created and projected talents such as Manuel da Costa Ataíde (sacred painter), Cláudio Manuel da Costa (poet and nonconfident), Frei Santa Rita Durão (author of the poem "Caramuru"), and Father Joaquim da Rocha (unconfident).
Mariana is located in the Gold Circuit, in the central tourist area of Minas Gerais. Much of the historical and cultural patrimony of the State is found along the streets of the city in beautiful mansions, squares and churches. The house of Barão do Pontal, for example, enchants to every visitor with its beautiful balconies in soapstone. The Sé Cathedral and the Church of São Francisco de Assis keep fine works of colonial art from Minas Gerais.
