The project of this quarter by Emperor Charles IV is the largest urban planning project in Europe during the fourteenth century. Its complete structure and its great axes are preserved to this day. The architectural works carried out around Wenceslas Square in the late 19th and early 20th centuries are practically an open-air museum.
The medieval New Town was planned around the walls of the Old Town (remnants of the current streets Revoluční, Na Přikopě and Národní). The center of this new neighborhood consists of its two large market squares known today as Wenceslas Square (horse market), and Charles Square (cattle market at the time). The latter, being the largest in Europe during the Middle Ages, exhibited each year the holy relics and the jewels of royalty. Some say his project was inspired by the New Jerusalem, image of the Ideal City. Numerous churches and parishes were built throughout the New City.
Until the early nineteenth century, the buildings keep their airy character with numerous gardens and open spaces. That is why this neighborhood became the natural space of extension of the metropolis from the middle of the century. In the streets parallel to Wenceslas Square, it is possible to discover the numerous architectural works of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century that show the evolution of various styles in a very small space.
